  • Cloud computing exhibition

    Jul 02, 2012

TAIPEI -- Taiwan’s fall electronics trade fair could generate double the amount of business of past events because of the addition of the first-ever cloud computing exhibition, the organizers said yesterday.

This year’s electronics fair, scheduled for Oct. 9-12, will feature as usual the "Taipei International Electronics Show" and the "Taiwan International Broadband Communications Show."

But in response to the strong development of the cloud sector in Taiwan, the first-ever "Taiwan International Cloud Technology and Internet of Things Show" will also be held at the same time and highlight infrastructure, platform and software services in the cloud computing field.

A total of 800 exhibitors will display their products at the three electronics shows, which are expected to attract 50,000 local and overseas visitors and generate over US$380 million in business, more than double the US$150 million generated last year, the organizers said.

"Because the world is changing rapidly, it’s the best time now to launch the cloud computing exhibition," said Jeremy Horng, executive director of the exhibition department at the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA).

"Large companies as well as small and medium-sized enterprises have begun to adopt cloud computing technologies, and the show will serve as an exchange platform to create more business opportunities," Horng said at a pre-show news conference.

Lu Shyue-ching, chairman of Taiwan’s Cloud Computing Association, said that well-known information service providers, including Chunghwa Telecom Co., Systex Corp., Inventec Corp., Elta TV and Syscom Group, will participate in the cloud computing show.

According to Bank of America Merrill Lynch, the global cloud computing industry will be worth an estimated US$95 billion in 2015.

Hoping to nurture cloud computing into the next trillion-Taiwan dollar industry, Taiwan’s government announced in 2010 that it would invest NT$24 billion over five years in the cloud computing sector.
