    Automation: Adaptive Machining for High Precision Fabrication

    It is any manufacturer’s goal to create an in-spec, high quality product every time. However, even with all the advances we’ve seen in machining and manufacturing over the years, errors and deviations are still a very real problem.

    Today, parts are built on computer aided design (CAD) systems before they’re ever built in real materials. Once the model is created, engineers will use computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software to generate a cutting path that will generate the finished part from the initial work piece. The CNC machine is programmed to create parts based on the computer-generated ideal templates, and cannot take into account deviations or other geometrical abnormalities that the actual part materials may contain.

    TechSolve has developed an adaptive machining system that enables generation of a dimensionally correct part via compensations for the as-is geometrical imperfections of a work piece. This system was demonstrated successfully on a composite component representative of a structural part of an airplane.

    Manufacturers can use this smart technology to reduce scrap and improve quality and consistency for each machined part. This technology allows manufacturers to feel more confident when machining near net shape, small stock allowance components, whether such components are made of metals or composite materials.

     

    About the speaker

    Dr. Radu Pavel joined TechSolve in 2004, bringing with him research and development skills in manufacturing processes, particularly machining and grinding. His expertise is focused on process design and optimization as well as process monitoring and control. Radu has successfully worked and completed numerous R&D projects supporting the manufacturing industry throughout the United States. Investigating, designing, and evaluating advanced technologies, he works to increase knowledge of advanced machining systems, and aids in the transition of that knowledge to industry through hands-on implementation and training.

    Career Highlights:

    • Conducted R&D work supporting the development of an adaptive machining system for complex geometry components
    • Investigated, evaluated, developed, and validated tool condition monitoring and machine health and maintenance technologies as part of the Smart Machine
    • Platform Initiative and Intelligent Machining Applications and Practices programs
    • Aided in the design of new technologies as part of the Intelligent Optimization and Control of Grinding Processes program, funded by the National Institute of
    • Standards and Technology Advanced Technology Program (NIST ATP)
    • Provided training focused on Grinding Principles and Practices and Practical Machining Principles
    • Investigated new manufacturing technologies focusing on hard turning and grinding (including electrolytic in-process dressing, ELID) while part of the
    • Precision Micro-Machining Center at the University of Toledo
    • Dr. Pavel received his PhD in Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Toledo, Ohio, and his Bachelor and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering as well as his Doctor of Engineering Science from the University Politehnica (Bucharest, Romania)
